ControlKey™ 2.0 Unveiled, Allowing Parents To Create ‘Approved’ List of Websites For Kids

Plug ControlKey’s Token Into a USB Slot and Entire Internet is Available;
Take It Out and Kids are Restricted to Sites Pre-Approved by Parent

LAWRENCE, KANSAS — Griffin Technologies, LLC, a leading provider of PC security products for home and business use, today announced the availability of ControlKey™ 2.0, the latest version of its practical USB token solution that helps parents control PC and Internet use. Thanks to its new "whitelist" website access control feature as well as other valuable improvements, ControlKey is more flexible and child-friendly than ever, while also giving parents the power they need to manage their children’s computer use.

Small, tamper-resistant, and easy to use, ControlKey is a key-like token that parents plug into a PC’s USB port to either provide or restrict access to the Internet, online chat rooms, instant messaging, applications, even the PC itself. Version 2.0 builds on the original benefits of ControlKey by allowing parents to create a list of approved websites (the whitelist); when the USB token is removed from the PC, only whitelisted sites are available.

Other improvements in ControlKey Version 2.0 include an easier setup procedure, new deactivation password protection, and better integration with Microsoft Internet Explorer that provides visual notification when a website is blocked by ControlKey.

"Parents have come to understand the vital importance of setting guidelines for their children’s PC and Internet use. ControlKey is the most practical way there is to accomplish this extremely important task," said Bennett Griffin, president and founder of Griffin Technologies. "ControlKey allows parents to decide exactly what and how often their children access the Internet."
Since its launch in North America in late 2003, ControlKey has experienced strong acceptance among both parents and the media. The product is built on the same technology foundation as SecuriKey, Griffin’s award-winning user authentication product for business use.

Whitelist Access
As an "ignition key" for the Internet, ControlKey gives parents peace-of-mind that their children are protected when on the web. The ControlKey token inserts into the PC’s USB port as easily as a key into a lock, authorizing only intended uses when parents are away or otherwise wish to restrict PC activity. ControlKey also prevents access to private or sensitive files such as banking or investment data, as well as websites with potential liability issues such as music/video file sharing sites.

In addition to establishing a list of approved websites, ControlKey 2.0’s whitelist feature can also authorize access to the Internet but no email, instant message, or chat rooms; full online access; or total restriction to the PC itself. Options can be easily selected in any combination according to the parent’s wishes from within ControlKey’s Protection Manager interface.

Setup, Deactivation Improvements
Installation and account setup are improved in Version 2.0 through a more user-friendly interface. Protection options are easier to choose; should the parent wish to deactivate or turn off the ControlKey account, a new deactivation password is required along with the USB token.

Griffin Technologies’ ControlKey 2.0 parental control product is priced at £39.99 (inc. VAT) and is currently available.
